Correct and Prevent Eye Health Issues

by David Jenyns

It is said that the eyes are the window to the soul. They are definitely one of the most important parts of the human body.  With this in mind it is vital that you care for your eyes properly to avoid adverse eye health issues and injuries.  Eye diseases are very common among today’s adults with additional issues as people mature into their senior years.  A few of these diseases include myopia, presbyopia, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.  They are caused by several different factors with a lack of proper nutrients at the top of the list.  Getting the facts and working towards preventing problems and taking care of any issues that arise is a great way to keep your eyes working at their peak abilities.

The best way to avoid eye health issues is to prevent problems before they have a chance to occur.  A balanced diet, regular exercise and additional supplements geared specifically toward eye health will help prevent the majority of vision problems.  This is especially important if you are at high risk for diabetes.  By helping to prevent diabetes you can eliminate the possibility of diabetic retinopathy.  Cartenoids such as lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamins A and E are beneficial to eye health and are aids to preventing age related macular degeneration and improving vision clarity.  Most people do not get sufficient amounts of these nutrients in their diets and can benefit by adding them in supplement form to their daily routines.

Eye injuries are common eye health issues.  They can range from damage due to over exposure to ultra-violet light from the sun to debris getting into the eye. All types of eye injuries can be very serious.  Preventing over exposure to the sun is as simple as wearing sunglasses to filer out the UV rays or by wearing a hat with a brim for shading.  It’s important to remember to wear protective glasses during any activity that involves chemicals or when around machinery and tools.  Become pro-active in extra precautions when it comes to protecting your eyes.  Accidents can happen in a fraction of a second.

As the body ages it can be plagued with common eye health issues.  In the early forties the ability to focus begins to deteriorate.  Bi-focal glasses are the normal solution.  The eyes also become more sensitive to light, dust and wind which results in excessive tearing.  Many people also suffer from floaters.  They are transparent little specks that seem to just float in front of the eyes.  Most floaters are harmless but if they increase drastically along with bright flashes of light the doctor should be called immediately.  With regular check-ups and modern medical advancements most issues can be prevented and corrected assuring good vision throughout life.
