Do computer glasses really reduce eye strain?

by David Jenyns

Question by Scotty: Do computer glasses really reduce eye strain?
At work i spend a lot of time staring at a computer monitor. I have eye strain problems and take breaks often, I do not wear glasses. I was at costco the other day and noticed they sell “computer glasses” which are supposed to “reduce eye strain when staring at computer monitors.” Is there any proof of this really being effective? If so how does it work? Furthermore where can I get some for cheap if they do work.

there is absolutely no proof of this. computer glasses are effectively a specialized version of reading glasses , so in effect perscription lenses in a set perscription and quite large lens. The idea is that it stops your eye trying to accomodate as much which is what causes eye strain. Now the big question it seems to me is does correcting your vision if you have good eyesight reduce strain or in fact give you problems once you move off the scrreen? ARe you constantly going to be taking the glasses on/off if someone comes up to you or you need to read something etc. etc. It seems to me likely as these glasses are basically designed specifically to read a screen at a set distance.

I wear glasses and work all day at teh screen. I find that getting the lighting right , moving teh monitor away and refocussing on my distance vision every so often works. I don’t believe that there is any real evidence yet that for the majority of people these help or might in fact make the situation worse. Without large scale usage and scientific studies over a period of time noone can say. You would therefore be taking a chance on whether or not this helped you. I would also think that its the sort of thing where getting a cheap set might well make matters worse. It really pays to have good quality lensees working in front of a screen.

I am not sure that the glasses are very much helpful…
How often do you take breaks and for how long ?
May be you need more relax time …
